“We Don’t Stop for Gas in Arkansas” in Chimerical Remembrance
“We Don’t Stop for Gas in Arkansas” came from a former roommate of mine, who had gone on a road trip from southern Illinois to Texas for the wedding of one of his closest friends. As he and his wife headed to the event, he occasionally posted photos to Facebook, along with “Chapter #”. I was amused by these titles and saved them, knowing that there was a story in there somewhere. Sure enough, one of his “chapters” became the title of this story.
I can’t recall why my former roommate didn’t stop for gas in Arkansas, but in my story, it’s a family superstition that the main character’s brother had started. The story opens with her learning of the death of her brother and needing to cross Arkansas to formally identify the body and collect his ashes after cremation. But things go a little differently than she planned.
This story is exclusive to Chimerical Remembrances, where it sits alongside other contemporary fantasy stories and poetry!
