“Spun Sugar” and “No Fear” in Weathering Youth

Because Weathering Youth is my biggest collection to date, I’m grouping the short stories and flash fiction stories in pairs for my posts, based on the way they fall in the collection. This lets me look at the connections between the stories and how I decided to arrange specific stories in the collection!

“Spun Sugar” and “No Fear” are both flash fiction pieces, and they share a common theme of girls with crushes and the boys who really don’t deserve them, but with a twist.

“Spun Sugar” takes on a thing my mom used to tell us when we were kids, which was that we wouldn’t melt if we got rained on, because we weren’t made out of cotton candy. I changed that to “spun sugar” for this story, but the same idea still applies. Except that in this case, the protagonist does start to melt in the rain, but not for the same reasons we used to act like we couldn’t go out in the rain as kids.

“No Fear” involves a teenage girl meeting her crush in the graveyard, only to find out that she’s not the only girl he was meeting. But there’s a massive twist in this story, which you’ll have to read to learn more!

Both “Spun Sugar” and “No Fear” are exclusive to Weathering Youth, and you can read them, along with other stories featuring young protagonists in a variety of settings, in print and ebook formats!
