The Non-Player Review of Video Games: Cyberpunk 2077

Jeremy has been a cyberpunk fan for years, so of course he picked up Cyberpunk 2077 when it came out. I was excited, because Keanu Reeves voices one of the characters in the game.

I was not prepared to hate a character voiced by Keanu Reeves. But man, Johnny Silverhand is a DICK! He’s grumpy and whiny, and it’s sort of no wonder why he doesn’t really have any friends. Yeah, he mellows some over the course of the game, but initially, he’s such a jerk to the player character that I’d have ditched him as quickly as possible.

Of course, the game doesn’t work like that, and you have to put up with his grumping and whining, and eventual character growth, for the whole game. And Jeremy played through it a BUNCH when it was new. So I heard a lot of Johnny Silverhand and spent most of that time just wanting to punch him.

But not Keanu. Keanu’s a good dude.

I totally get your frustration with Johnny Silverhand! As a fellow cyberpunk fan, I was also surprised by how abrasive he is at first. It’s interesting how the game forces you to stick with him despite that. Thanks for sharing this honest take—it’s refreshing to see someone not just praising Keanu’s involvement blindly.

Thanks for your comment! I do love Keanu as a person, and this shows his range as an actor. But yeah, Johnny is challenging to empathize with, for sure!
