Interview with Darryl Cunningham
Today, I’m talking with Darryl Cunningham, whose graphic novel John of the Night came out last week!
DV: Tell us a little about yourself and your writing.
DC: I’m a UK based cartoonist/writer, known predominantly as a creator of non-fiction graphic novels on a variety of subjects, including science, mental health, economics, and politics. In recent years, my books have focused on the billionaire class, including a book on Elon Musk. The book I’ve just finished, John of the Night, is my first foray into fiction for more than a decade. It’s an apocalyptically fast-paced adventure science fantasy story involving time travel, parallel universes, gods, superbeings, and the end of all things. All the good stuff, in fact.
DV: What drew you to writing a science fiction graphic novel?
DC: The sheer freedom to let loose my imagination without restraint after years of being confined by non-fiction and mere facts. This led to an explosion of creativity.
DV: Now that you’ve made the jump to fiction, how do you anticipate that changing the way you approach your nonfiction comics?
DC: That’s really difficult for me to say. It might help me change the structure of how a tell a true story. I usually take a very linear approach, telling the story year by year, but it doesn’t have to be done that way.
DV: What is your favorite thing about writing comics?
DC: Comics are like movies, but the budgets are much, much cheaper.
DV: What’s next for you in the writing world?
DC: At least two sequels to John of the Night. One where I’ll be writing for another illustrator. Beyond that, I don’t know.
