Poetry Form: Haiku Sonnet

I’ve been back in the swing of working on some form poetry, so I’ve got some new-to-me forms to talk about!

The haiku sonnet is a combination of the haiku (or senryu) form and the sonnet form. It also has aspect of the tanka form, which I talked about recently. Simply put, it’s four related haiku plus two additional seven-syllable lines to round out the fourteen lines of the sonnet.

When it comes to sonnets, I like versions of the form that don’t involve rhyme or iambic pentameter, so the haiku sonnet is perfect for me. With the short lines of the haiku, there isn’t much space to work with, but it can be a nice way to write a tight poem using imagery that speaks volumes.
