Desk Tour: My New Desk Area Setup

Laptop with a secondary monitor, external keyboard, and mouse, with hexagonal bookshelf in the background and art on the wall.I spent a few hours recently rearranging my writing desk area, so I have a new desk area setup. After some disbelief of this on BSky, I decided to do a little desk tour of the new setup!

My desk area is about half of our dining room table, tucked in the little nook of our living room that is the alleged dining room. Jeremy is going to be soon setting up a desk area on the other half of the dining room table, so we’ve both been working on getting the area generally cleaned up.

My desk surface has my laptop on a riser that puts the screen at eye level, plus a second screen (a portable one with a cover like a tablet that doubles as a stand), also on a riser. This riser also holds a variety of post-it notes of different types, and my daily planner tucks underneath the riser. I’ve also got an external keyboard (wired) and mouse (wireless), and a matching space wrist rest and mouse pad. On the far side of the laptop, I have a handful of small ceramic cups (that once held custard) with some additional post-it notes, chapstick, my white-out tape dispenser, and scrap paper. I also have a coaster and my big headphones with a built-in mic over there.

Then I’ve got three different storage setups along the wall and on the floor. On the far left (next to the wine rack), I’ve got a small filing system and drawer. Most of what’s on and in that is stickers, honestly, though the purple transparent container at the top has a few pairs of arm and wrist warmers. There are also a handful of partially used notebooks there and more post-it notes. Below that, there’s a three-drawer plastic storage unit. The top drawer has crafty supplies, including washi tape, stencils, rubber stamps and stamp pads, and markers. It also has more post-it notes (yeah, I bought them in bulk, so there are a LOT) and some random paperclips and binder clips. The middle drawer is where I keep my future daily planner books and the stickers for those. The bottom drawer has blank notebooks (some of the stash).

The hexagonal bookcase is a random “near the dumpster” find. At one point, a larger piece of this bookcase was out by the dumpster, and since I know my friend Nate’s spouse really loves hexagons, I offered it to them. We could tell it was handmade and custom built, so we can only guess that someone moved into the area and realized their new place wouldn’t accommodate it. A month or so later, I found the second piece, which I claimed for myself.

The hexagonal shelf shape isn’t the best for books, but that’s what mostly lives on this bookcase. The tops of the shelves are where I keep my pens and markers that I use most frequently, along with some knick-knacks and a small plastic filing rack for narrow and small items. The top hexagon is books and notebooks that I’m actively using (and a fidget toy and weirdly bright tap light). The second hexagon is for more notebooks, some of which are partially used and others of which are brand new. The bottom hexagon has my weird assortment of foreign language dictionaries (some of which belonged to my dad when he was a teenager) and baby name books (including the one my mom bought before I was born) and some other writing reference books that I use only occasionally. There are also a couple of notebooks down there that have extensive notes for partially completed or not even started novel projects… That’s also where my wireless external keyboard (which I use with my iPad) lives.

Finally, I’ve got a pair of black “milk crates” (which have never held milk in their life) on the floor in front of the hexagonal bookcase. This is where I keep my various writing prompt decks and other related writing prompt things. The bottom one has the ones I use less frequently, and the upper one has the ones I use more frequently. The latest acquisition, the Story Engine Loremaster’s Deck (which I haven’t talked about here yet, but I will soon!), lives on the top because the box won’t fit nicely in the milk crates. But it also makes a good place to keep my weekly planner book, so that’s convenient.

There are also a couple of old lunchboxes on the floor. One holds yet more stickers, and the other holds some spare electronics cords and manuals for electronic devices.

Looking at the photo, I realize there’s still a few random things that could probably have better homes, but seeing as this is a HUGE improvement from my former setup, I’m pretty pleased with the outcome. There’s still a lot of stuff in my desk area, but it’s organized rather than living in treacherous piles on the floor surrounding my chair!
