Greek and Roman Myths in Old Legends and New Fables

Because Greek and Roman mythology is some of the most commonly taught in the western world, it’s not surprising that a number of my pieces in Old Legends and New Fables reflect this knowledge. Even those pieces that deal with the legends of other cultures often get viewed through a Greek or Roman lens because of familiarity with those pantheons over so many others.

Despite there being a lot of Greek and Roman myths within this collection, some of these are the pieces I feel very strongly about. “The Lovers Across the Strait,” which is my “Scylla and Charybdis as lovers” poem is one of my favorites I’ve written. I’ve also got several Persephone-related poems in this collection, along with the flash fiction story, “Praxidikai,” which sees Persephone as a modern-day righter of wrongs. I’ve also got poems linked to The Odyssey, Discord/Eris, and more, and a flash fiction story about the Oracle at Delphi, “Breathe Deep.”

Most of the pieces in Old Legends and New Fables are on the shorter side of things, which means I had an opportunity to pack in loads of different cultures and their stories. But you’ll also find plenty of familiar faces and tales if you, too, studied Greek and Roman mythology during your schooling!
