Review of The Devil Walks in Blood by David Green

The Devil Walks in Blood by David Green (Eerie River Publishing, 2021) combines the first two books in this supernatural private investigator series into a single volume, giving the reader a fuller picture of the fascinating world and characters.

Nick Halloran died while on a case, but the intervention of a passerby made sure he didn’t stay that way. Unfortunately, it left him with a rather inconvenient side effect—now he sees and hears ghosts. Combined with his line of work, investigating supernatural goings-on in the town of Haven, which to Nick is “Hell,” he’s got all sorts of unusual things breathing down his neck and trying to make him dead for a second, more final time. But of course his life couldn’t be that simple, so he’s got entities trying to keep him alive as well, making him a fairly permanent resident of Hell.

The stories included in this book have a strong Noir, hard-bitten detective vibe while still reflecting modern sensibilities, with fewer damsels in distress and plenty of references to popular music from the character’s lifetime. Nick’s character voice is equal parts charming and rough, and the supporting cast of characters, even when they aren’t entirely human, have similar endearing qualities. If you’re a fan of the Dresden Files books but are looking for something a little different, check out The Devil Walks in Blood!
