“Penny White and the Clockwork Star” and “Someone Else” in Weathering Youth
Because Weathering Youth is my biggest collection to date, I’m grouping the short stories and flash fiction stories in pairs for my posts, based on the way they fall in the collection. This lets me look at the connections between the stories and how I decided to arrange specific stories in the collection!
“Penny White and the Clockwork Star” and “Someone Else” are possibly the oddest pairing in this collection. The main thing they have in common is a person looking back on a formative event from their teenage years. But one story is lightly science fiction (with a side of hopepunk), while the other is horror.
“Penny White and the Clockwork Star” follows the attempts of Celeste to find a way to help her girlfriend, Penny, test out a green energy source she’s invented. The problem is that they can’t test it without a spaceship, and those are difficult to come by, even if your father runs an aerospace company.
Meanwhile, “Someone Else” is flash fiction story of teen actors on a horror movie set that turns into actual horror when something odd happens to one of the actors.
Both of these stories are only available in Weathering Youth, where they sit alongside other stories featuring young protagonists in a variety of settings, available in both print and ebook formats!
