Completing Wonderbook (Sort of)

I’ve been working through the writing exercises in the appendices of Wonderbook, after having gone through the chapters, but I’ve recently made the decision to not complete all of those exercises.

I found the text of Wonderbook very useful to me, and I wound up highlighting and flagging a lot of material that I know I’ll return to now and then. The exercises, however, while definitely designed to stretch your writing muscles, often didn’t quite resonate with me. They generally are oriented toward very odd pieces out of very odd prompts, and while I certainly write a lot of weird stuff, I found that most of what I was coming up with for the writing exercises was humorous stories rather than heartfelt stories. And that didn’t quite feel like the take-away I was getting from other portions of the book.

I did get some stories and story seeds out of some of the exercises, but by and large, they didn’t feel like a good fit for my writing preferences. So I decided to put it aside for a while. I can always come back to the remaining exercises (or even repeat some of the ones I’ve done) later on. But I feel like I got much more from reading this book rather than doing the writing exercises.
