Fun for Friday with Big Pink Book Prompt 15: Leisure?
There’s a lot going on in the image of how I used prompt 15 in the Big Pink Book, so let’s dive in!
Since I had the washi tape across the top of the page, I turned the book sideways to write my list, which led to a weird page with the caption on both margins of the page, because I wrote it on the left-hand margin first, and then realized I needed to write so that the list would be using the right-hand margin as the top. So I rewrote the caption there, too.
The caption is “Things you can do in 7 minutes and 27 seconds.” The list includes the following:
- Research new knitting projects
- Color
- Very short walk (maybe inside)
- Sort crafty supplies (a small amount)
- Listen to music (2-ish songs)
- Make tea (IDK how long the kettle takes)
- How many rows can I knit or crochet?
- Japanese practice (or Korean after December)
- Sort stickers
- Stick stickers
- Fill a blank notebook page with whatever (write/draw/stickers/all 3)
- Dance (upright or sitting, 2-ish songs)
- Browse pictures on Pixabay
- Tarot draw
Across the bottom of the page, I added “(Make a list like this!)” because oddly, it probably took me about 7 and a half minutes to make the list. I also added letter stickers to spell out “I Know How to Leisure Perfectly,” which is apparently a quote from a season of Bridgerton that I haven’t watched yet. I got the quote from Ash Huang’s recent newsletter, which used this quote as its title. (And I share Ash’s sentiment about feeling called out by the quote.) The newsletter talked about making a “dopamine menu,” and it was my inspiration for what I did with this page!
My idea is to have some “tasks” that don’t take long to complete, but that will make a good break between, say, writing sprints. I went for mainly creative things, only a couple of which are vaguely writing adjacent, as the goal is for this to be restorative. So some of the things on the list COULD lead to something I want to write, but they’re not required to inspire that. And while some of these options might seem like they’re production focused, things like sorting stuff or timing my knitting or crochet are actually fun for me–honestly, those are the ones that are likely to give me the dopamine hit of “I have done a thing!” Possibly the only one that is going to be “work” is the language practice, but it’s something that I wanted on the list so that it doesn’t completely fall by the wayside.
This page could be used for a lot of other purposes, but I’m pretty happy with my “dopamine menu” of leisure items. If you made a similar one, what would be on it? Or if this page led you a different direction, how did you use it?
