“Evergreen” and “The Magic Matters” in Chimerical Remembrance
“Evergreen” and “The Magic Matters” are two very short stories in Chimerical Remembrance. “Evergreen” is flash fiction, and “The Magic Matters” is microfiction. What these two stories have in common is that they’re about family relationships that have major or minor issues.
“Evergreen” involves the relationship between a non-binary adult child and their terminally ill mother, with themes of legacy and expectations. What begins as a deeply fraught relationship begins to be mended by the end of the story, while still acknowledging that mending and healing are not instantaneous.
“The Magic Matters” takes a lighter tone but shares the theme of expectations and adds a theme of remembrance, which is particularly fitting for this collection. In this story, a ghostly grandfather watches over his daughter and granddaughter as they leave offerings for him in their own ways.
“Evergreen” originally appeared in Inner Worlds in February 2024, and “The Magic Matters” appeared in The Colored Lens in March 2025. You can read them both, alongside other contemporary fantasy stories, in Chimerical Remembrance!
