Now that the videos from the 2026 WriteHive online conference are posted, I’ll be sharing some of those with quick summaries. This week, I’ll be talking about the “Elevator Pitch Workshop” with Patchree Jones, which I helped facilitate.
Patchree has a communications background, so her approach to this topic was a fantastic way to look at how to approach multiple different ways in which authors write the text that will help them sell their books. She differentiated between book blurbs, log lines, and elevator pitches, explaining that the first two are most often targeted toward the end user, a.k.a. readers, while the third (and the subject of the workshop) can be targeted at agents, publishers, or readers, but that each potential audience is looking for different information. And while self-published authors might think that they don’t need to have the elevator pitch if they’re not looking for an agent or publisher, it can be a useful tool for them as well.
The information in this presentation is amazing, even for someone who has been writing and publishing for a while. Patchree talked about how to craft the various types of text, even giving formulas on how to write each one. Having concrete information like that really helped me understand the process of constructing these marketing tools and using them appropriately!
The entire presentation is only about 40 minutes, but you’ll definitely want to be ready to take a ton of notes when you watch it. The lovely thing about these WriteHive videos is that you can pause and rewatch to your heart’s content! So if you’re struggling to figure out what to tell people about your book, watch the “Elevator Pitch Workshop“!
