Fun for Friday: Big Pink Book of Prompts, A Galaxy Draws a Self Portrait
For the twelfth prompt from the Big Pink Book, I took the three elements together and combined them into an idea for writing a poem with the title “A Galaxy Draws a Self Portrait.” I haven’t finished it yet, but I’m posting a photo of my page of notes.
At the top of the page, I wrote the title, along with four lines that might or might not end up in the final poem. The more I look at them, the more likely I feel like they won’t end up in the poem, but you have to start somewhere!
Along the right-hand side of the page, I wrote some words that can be used to talk about both art and space, some with definitions as well. There are also a handful that I just liked as words that had a tangential relationship to one or the other.
- illuminate
- lacuna – blank space, missing part
- luminosity
- contrast
- gradient
- blending
- composition
- perspective
- syzygy – three celestial bodies in a straight line
- accretion – accumulating matter
- interstellar medium – gas and dust between stars in a galaxy – formed into stars
Finally, at the bottom left, I wrote a quote from Anne Morrow Lindbergh (wife of Charles Lindbergh, but an aviator in her own right and an author): “It is only framed in space that beauty blooms; only in space are events and objects and people unique and significant and therefore beautiful.” I don’t think that the quote will inform the poem, but the language was lovely, so I had to jot it down.
I’ll plan on turning all of this into a poem at some point soon, and then hopefully I’ll be able to share that I’ve sold it sometime down the road!
