“Hollow” in This Book Has Ghosts in It
“Hollow” is a flash fiction story that plays with how our perceptions can color the idea of “the end of the world.” In this case, it’s a little bit horror, a little bit apocalyptic, and definitely dark contemporary fantasy.
I wrote this story as part of a horror writing course I was taking from Nino Cipri in 2022. I think there’s a bit of post-pandemic emotions tangled up in this story, particularly with themes of isolation and some forgetting how to interact with other human beings, which many people experienced during the pandemic. This aspect is also something that I see more as I look back on this story, while I wasn’t necessarily aware of that part at the time I wrote it. Sometimes, the perspective of time really makes parts of stories hit differently, and that’s the case for me with “Hollow.”
