“Daddy’s Little Girl” in Sparx and Arrows

Cover art for Sparx & Arrows“Daddy’s Little Girl” was one of the first stories I wrote, and one of the earliest stories I published. After being invited to write in the Cobalt City Universe, I carved out a little corner that would let me write a story set in history and with a female hero. Eleanor Castile was that character, and her pioneering turn as the Huntsman while her father was injured later led to writing another female hero, Sarah Castile, who later operated as the Huntsman in Europe during World War 2 and became Sure Shot in the 1950s in California. It’s a family legacy inside the Huntsman legacy of female members of the family doing what needs to be done, in spite of the patriarchal bent of the men of the family, who only pass the superhero mantle along the male line (even skipping daughters for nephews or beyond).

Both Eleanor and Sarah are delightful heroes with equal, if not superior, skills to their male counterparts. And I love writing them in their separate time periods. Though perhaps someday, I’ll write a story where they can cross over and meet each other. I think that would be delightful for them both!

You can find “Daddy’s Little Girl” in Sparx and Arrows, along with the first Sarah Castile story, “Red Scare.”
