Review of Broken Sky by Morgan K. Bell
Broken Sky by Morgan K. Bell (2022) is the first book in their fantasy series Skies of Cyrna. It’s a fast-paced adventure with airships, dragons, and a whole lot of magic.
Dorian Valmont is the ward of a powerful noble, so when he shows up looking to become an aeronaut, no one expects him to be able to do the job. After all, he’s a demon-bound magic user who has grown up in the lap of luxury. But Dorian perseveres, learning about his fellow crew, his family history, and himself along the way.
The story is told in a non-linear fashion, with jumps into the past that clarify and expand upon pieces of the plot in the primary storyline. It’s all clearly marked as such, but occasionally it is a little confusing as to whether or not a specific character who was not present has information from one of the flashback sequences. However, this doesn’t greatly detract from an otherwise well-told story.
If you like your fantasy books a little more on the sword and sorcery or swashbuckling side of things, with a little side of steampunk in the form of airships, check out Broken Sky!
