Revisiting How Hybrid Work Impacts My Writing

In September, I posted about a return to hybrid work (some days in the office, some days working from home) and how it was likely to impact my writing. Now that I’ve been doing this pretty regularly for a couple of months, I have more insights.

Working in the office, along with the commute, is EXHAUSTING. Not only do I have to wake up earlier in the morning to catch my bus downtown, but I also do a lot more physical activity on days I am in the office. The added physical activity is a good thing, but it really wears me out. Getting home around 45-60 minutes later than my work day ends is also a rough adjustment, because it means immediately scrambling to get dinner ready. We have been eating a lot more things that are simple to throw together quickly, which often means more frozen meals and things out of cans and boxes.

I have adjusted back to getting things done on my lunch break, but that’s almost all “business” side stuff, almost never creative work. And while it’s good that I’m getting that done, with being exhausted when I get home, creative work sometimes has to take a back burner to doing something a bit more relaxing or mindless.

I am doing a pretty good job of getting more writing done on the weekends, particularly when I can make it to group productivity sessions online. I have a little bit of trouble motivating myself on some other days, because again, I sometimes want to do something relaxing or mindless.

All of this is compounded by my day job being busier than it is historically at this time of year, but I think this may be the new normal–busy year round, rather than mostly in the spring and summer months! This October was a taste of that, and I hope things will level out, but they may not. So I’ll keep having to adjust and find better times and ways to get things done!
