Review of Brambles by Intisar Khanani
Brambles: A Thorn Short Story by Intisar Khanani (Purple Monkey Press, 2020) serves as a prequel story to Khanani’s Dauntless Path series of fairy tale inspired fantasy books. This story gives the background for Princess Alyrra, explaining just how she has come to earn her family’s wrath and disdain.
Coming into this story prior to reading the Dauntless Path series, I found it a good introduction to the sort of world and characters to expect from the series. While the pacing of the short story felt a little unusual to me, it still worked overall and presented intriguing snippets of the characters and larger world. I think it’s likely that someone who has already read Thorn, the first book in the Dauntless Path series, would find even more to love about this short story, but if you’re looking for a quick read and a peek into Khanani’s storytelling, Brambles is a great place to start!
