“The Train Station That Knows What You Need” and “We Dream in Color” in Chimerical Remembrance
I have two flash fiction pieces that share themes of longing, dreams, and also colors: “The Train Station That Knows What You Need” and “We Dream in Color.”
The first story, “The Train Station That Knows What You Need,” is a fairly dreamy surreal piece about a remote Japanese train station with abnormal properties. The colors in this story are also rather abnormal and getting to describe them was fun. Interestingly, while I was in Japan a couple of years ago, we took the Shinkansen (bullet train) through this station, but sadly, our train blew past it fast enough that I didn’t get to see it. This story originally appeared in Cafe Irreal.
“We Dream in Color” was inspired by an image where only a single road sign appeared to be in color, as the rest of the landscape was bleak. For this story, I imagined an apocalypse where color had vanished from the world, as my characters try to hold on to the little bit of color remaining and bolster it with their memories of colors. This story originally appeared in Toad Shade Zine.
