Review of So You Want to be a Robot by Merc Fenn Wolfmoor
Merc Fenn Wolfmoor’s collection So You Want to be a Robot (Robot Dinosaur Press, 2024) contains 22 fabulous speculative fiction stories with queer and neurodiverse characters living their lives and dealing with the world around them, which is not always kind.
Normally, when I review an anthology or collection, I talk a bit about specific stories that I particularly enjoyed. The problem with this collection is that I loved every story in it. While some of them are bittersweet or don’t have happy endings, even those still shine beautifully. If I had to pick out favorites, I found a couple of the stories that deal with the fae right up my alley: “Winter Bride” and “Gray Skies, Red Wings, Blue Lips, Black Hearts.” The first of these has a quite dark ending, while the second ends with a bit more hope, but I really loved the way they portrayed those pressed into the service of the fae and how it affects them.
If you love inventive and beautifully written short speculative fiction, I highly recommend checking out So You Want to be a Robot!
