K-Pop Demon Hunters and Song Recommendations: “What It Sounds Like”

If you’ve watched the “K-Pop Demon Hunters” movie on Netflix recently, you might still have some of the songs from the movie stuck in your head. While the songs on the whole had a bit more English than the majority of K-pop songs do (though there are certainly K-pop artists who have done songs or even entire albums in English), they were all pretty representative of the genre. If you’re interested in finding more K-pop songs with a similar vibe, I’ve got recommendations.

We’re now to the final song in the movie, “What It Sounds Like” by Huntr/x This one goes from a soulful acapella solo to all three girls singing, and then turns into a dance club bop. Needless to say, that makes it a little different from many K-pop songs. And honestly, by the point in the movie where Rumi starts singing this song, I’d stopped making snap judgments on who the songs reminded me of, because I was fully invested in the plot and these girls as their own group!

That being said, I think the song that comes the closest for me might be “You Better Know” by Red Velvet. Red Velvet is a five member girl group that is semi-disbanded, in that a couple of the members chose to not renew their contract with the group’s company, though they’ve signed with the company for group activities. (This is not uncommon, but historically, it suggests the end of the group.) It’s got the lovely harmonies and a similar beat to the second part of “What It Sounds Like.”

The other one I might recommend is “Airplane” by f(x). f(x) was a five member girl group that has since disbanded. Their song “Airplane” is more similar to the latter part of “What It Sounds Like.” (This was also a suggestion in the song recommendations video.)

Finally, if you really love acapella K-pop, check out Narin, which is a five member co-ed group that does some phenomenal covers, including medleys of individual groups over time and of songs over the course of a given year. (They also have a lovely cover of a portion of “Golden.”)

And that’s it! If you’ve missed any of my song recommendations, all the posts are tagged with “k-pop demon hunters,” so you can catch up on the recommendations!
