K-Pop Demon Hunters and Song Recommendations: “Your Idol”
If you’ve watched the “K-Pop Demon Hunters” movie on Netflix recently, you might still have some of the songs from the movie stuck in your head. While the songs on the whole had a bit more English than the majority of K-pop songs do (though there are certainly K-pop artists who have done songs or even entire albums in English), they were all pretty representative of the genre. If you’re interested in finding more K-pop songs with a similar vibe, I’ve got recommendations.
This week’s song is “Your Idol,” which is definitely the one that felt the most like other boy group music that I enjoy! It’s got a darker, more mature vibe than “Soda Pop,” which is what I tend to listen to from boy groups.
The songwriters for the movie have given a lot of hints as to the groups that inspired the Saja Boys and the songs that inspired “Your Idol.” And the recommendation video also had many of these songs in the section of the video. I think the song that the initial listen to felt like most for me was “Mama” by EXO. EXO was a twelve member boy group that had Korean and Chinese subunits (though not all of the members of the Chinese subunit were Chinese), so they often released two versions of the same song, one performed by each subunit. I’ve linked the Korean version above, and here’s the Chinese version of “Mama.”
However, I also watched a mashup of “Halazia” by Ateez and “Your Idol, and that’s an even closer fit, in my mind. I know that when fans make mashups, they often tweak one or both songs a bit, but I’ve also listened to “Halazia” quite a bit, separately from the mashup, and it is a really good fit!
The other recommendations I have are based on ones from the recommendation video:
- “Wolfgang” by Stray Kids (eight member boy group, which is my absolute favorite boy group). This video is a live performance from a competition show (which they won), as they’ve never made a video for this song!
- “Red Lights” by Bang Chan and Hyunjin (members of Stray Kids). This one really matches the dark vibe of “Your Idol,” though the song itself doesn’t quite sound the same.
- “Dr. BeBe” by Pentagon (originally a ten member boy group, which lost one member and is no longer active). This is another “vibe” match if not necessarily a sound match.
Next time, I’ll have my final song recommendation post with “What it Sounds Like”! (You can find all of the previous posts under the “k-pop demon hunters” tag!)
