Trilogy Middles in Brass and Glass 2: The Long-Cursed Map

When I reached the point at which Brass and Glass became a trilogy, I had to sit down to outline the entire series. With one book under my belt, and two more planned, I needed to figure out how to sustain the overall story across three books but also make each book able to stand on its own.

The tricky book in a trilogy like that can be the middle book, because you don’t want to obviate the need for the third book, but you also can’t just have your characters chewing on scenery for an entire book. (Maybe you can. But I didn’t think that worked in a series that is heavy on the action and adventure.)

Luckily for me, the plot I’d created in the first book lent itself well to having a book in the middle that could still have a lot going on without resolving the big plot. I’d established in book 1 that there were seven casks of Cranglimmering whiskey. So it made a lot of sense to have my intrepid airship pirates search out more of these casks to obtain the pieces of the map that had been hidden within.

Brass and Glass 2: The Long-Cursed Map references that map. However, there’s a secondary meaning to the name. But you’ll have to read the books to find out that plot point, as I don’t want to spoil it! The good news is that all three books of this trilogy are out, so you can pick them all up and get the entire story without having to wait for the next one!
