Another Batch of Flights of Foundry Videos

Recently, I’ve been helping the fine folks at The Dream Foundry prepare, post, and promote some of the panel videos from the 2023 Flights of Foundry online convention. New content goes up every Sunday and Wednesday, and many of the videos are up permanently. (Some remain up for an limited amount of time.)

Here’s a handful of recent videos writers might want to check out:

  • Generational Trauma: The Panel: Right now, the industry is particularly interested in generational trauma, along with its growing focus on cultural diasporas and “own voices.” But the fact is that these works often come from writers and artists who have experienced generational trauma and are grappling with it. Why is generational trauma “having its moment” and what are the nuances, tensions, and complications that come with that?
  • Your Public Persona: Who You Are as a Writer: You’ve heard of author branding, and you know all about how social media engagement is a must. But is it really? How does a writer successfully build an audience vs a community, what should you plan or prepare for in your writerly future (readings, interviews, etc.), and how can you? Panelists will give tips and advice on these topics and more.
  • How to Do Horror After Seeing the Monster: You’ve spent so long on the build up to the moment, now what? How do you maintain the tension after the monster has been revealed? How do you make the sequel horrifying when the audience already experienced everything from the original?
  • Climate-Fiction as Decolonial Narrative: It’s been said that you can’t oppose colonialism without supporting environmental justice. Does that mean that climate fiction is an inherently decolonized genre? If not, how does it lend itself to decolonial narratives, and what can the genre do to expand the scope for these stories?

The Dream Foundry YouTube channel, which has panels going back to 2020, is a great resource for authors and other creatives. Just remember that some videos may have limited availability, so if you see one you’re interested in, it’s better to watch it sooner rather than later!
