K-Pop Demon Hunters and Song Recommendations: “Golden”

Back to posting about “K-Pop Demon Hunters” songs!

If you’ve watched the “K-Pop Demon Hunters” movie on Netflix recently, you might still have some of the songs from the movie stuck in your head. While the songs on the whole had a bit more English than the majority of K-pop songs do (though there are certainly K-pop artists who have done songs or even entire albums in English), they were all pretty representative of the genre. If you’re interested in finding more K-pop songs with a similar vibe, I’ve got recommendations.

This week’s song is “Golden,” performed by HUNTR/X, and which has quickly become my favorite song from the movie. It’s got incredible vocals, which definitely remind me of Twice (though amusingly, this is not the song that members of Twice perform for this movie).

Twice debuted in 2015 with nine members, all of whom are still in the group. They have five Korean members, three Japanese members, and one Taiwanese member. In terms of their roles in the group, they primarily have vocalists and dancers with two or three rappers, depending on the era. So their songs tend to be fairly vocal heavy with some rap, though many of their newer songs are lighter on the rap. I think “Golden” matches most closely with “I Got You,” which the video with recommendations also suggested.

However, there is NO denying, once you hear it, that “Golden” is extremely similar to “I Am” and “Rebel Heart” by Ive. Ive is a newer, six-member girl group, and I’ve recently realized that I might be a fan of them. I’m still learning about them, though! (Also recommendations from the video.)

Other artists and songs you might also check out are:

  • Itzy: A five-member girl group on the same label as Twice, they definitely have some similarities to Twice’s vocal style. The song I most thought of from them in relation to “Golden” is “Born to Be” (which was recorded when one of their members was on hiatus).
  • Nmixx: A six-member girl group on the same label as Twice and Itzy, again with some similarities to their sister groups’ vocal styles. Here, I’d recommend “See That?” (the Korean title is “Byul Byul Byul,” which means “star star star” and features in the chorus).
  • izna: A seven-member girl group that was recently formed from a competition show, which has several very strong vocalists. Their song “iwaly” (I will always love you) has some similarities, though it’s not a perfect match. But I really like this newer group and want them to have a bunch of success! (This was also recommended by the video.)

There are also a TON of covers of “Golden” on YouTube. One of my personal faves is by Minkyun, who is one of my favorite vocalists in ONF. I also really love Narin’s acapella covers, and this one is no exception!
