Doorways in the Gloom and the Doorways Within
When I titled my collection, Doorways in the Gloom, I was thinking mostly about the idea of shadowy doorways, like the one pictured on the cover. When there’s darkness beyond a doorway, you never know what might be lurking there.
As it turns out, though, the title also really fits with some of the pieces included in the collection. Several of the pieces involve haunted or otherwise unusual houses and doorways, while others use a less literal definition of a doorway and more of the idea of a threshold between one thing and another. This is a rich metaphor in horror and dark fiction stories, in the sense of the dangers of the unknown and crossing between the known and unknown. After all, many humans have a strong fear of the unknown and the dangers that might lie within an unknown place, person, or thing.
