WriteHive 2025 Recap

July 11-13 was the WriteHive annual online conference for this year, and as I have for the past couple of years, I attended and participated in a bunch of events!

On Friday night, I was the interviewer for an interactive fiction Q&A with Livia J. Elliot. This was a fantastic Q&A, with Livia providing a lot of great tips for people interested in writing interactive fiction. I didn’t take a whole lot of notes because I was busy listening, so I’m definitely going to go back to this one when it’s available to rewatch and absorb more information!

On Saturday, I started off my day with the panel on “LGBTQ+ History in Publishing,” which I moderated. This was a great discussion amongst the panelists about LGBTQ+ authors, books, and trends in the publishing industry. And while there have been and are challenges to LGBTQ+ authors being published and read widely, overall, there’s a lot of great history and interest from many readers ongoing! For this panel, I created a Google Doc with links to the panelists, the authors they mentioned, and a handful of articles and other resources on the topic!

After that panel, I watched a panel on Gothic fiction, which I’m definitely going to revisit, as there was a ton of great information and a lively conversation in the conference Discord.

In the afternoon, I led the Poetry Writing Workshop with a small group, during which we played around with haiku and ekphrastic poetry and also talked about writing and teaching poetry writing. Then was “Breadcrumbing Clues in Mystery Novels,” on which I was a panelist. Though the panel was pre-recorded, I watched it along with the other attendees and answered some of their questions.

In the evening, we had a 100 Word Flash Fiction Open Mic scheduled, but sadly, it wound up being too late for the attendees who were interested. Instead, I wrote a drabble while waiting to see if anyone would arrive, and then talked a bit about drabbles on the Discord server.

On Sunday, I was the live moderator for the discussion on the “Troubling Tropes” panel, followed by the “Shared Worlds: Writing Multi-Author Series” panel, another one I moderated. Both of these had some great discussions going on in the Discord while we watched the panels!

It was a busy, busy weekend, but I had a lovely time and connected with loads of other authors and creatives. After the panels are available on YouTube, I’ll watch the LONG list of panels I couldn’t watch during the conference and write up recaps of those, like I did last year!
