My June 2025 Publications!
I had two publications in June 2025, but one of them was a BIG one for me!
My story, “Last Dam Standing,” appeared in the July/August 2025 issue of Analog Science Fiction & Fact, which is available now! Analog has long been on my list of markets to which I’d love to sell something, so I was ecstatic when I got the acceptance for this story. It’s a post-apocalyptic, climate change with sea-level rise story, involving aging hydroelectric dams, communities, and hope.
My day job often involves editing reports about hydroelectric dams and associated infrastructure, and as such, I’ve learned a bit about them. I set out to write this story armed with that knowledge. When I finished, though, I wanted to make sure I’d gotten the terminology correct. Another author on a Discord server pointed me in the direction of a friend with engineering knowledge, who read through my story and gave me some suggestions. I’m super grateful for the help from these two people, which helped me have the best possible draft of the story to submit.
It took me just over two years between when I finished this story and Analog‘s acceptance, during which time it received rejections from a few other markets. But I’m so excited to have found this story a wonderful home!
I don’t want to bury my other June publication, though! I wrote a drabble, “Bending Light,” for the Reach Your Apex Community Drabble challenge with a theme of “mirage.” In this case, I turned it into a sci-fi story about the equivalent of a mirage of an oasis in space! The Reach Your Apex folks make short videos with the text of the drabbles, which is a super cool way to share them!
