The Non-Player Review of Video Games: The Music of the BioShock Series

I love music in general, and music in video games is a large part of what makes them memorable for me, possibly especially because I’m not playing the games.
The first two BioShock games have a ton of music from the first half of the twentieth century, with a few assorted pieces from earlier and later. BioShock Infinite has a wider time range for the music, including modern covers of older songs and some modern songs recorded to feel like period songs (the “anachronistic” covers).
By and large, the music in this series is great. However, having older music often means that you have problematic songs. This is particularly an issue in BioShock Infinite, which touches heavily on historical racism and White supremacy. Though I enjoy the modern and anachronistic covers, some of the the “contemporary” pieces (matching the historical setting of the game) are truly awful. I imagine a lot of the folks playing these games might not listen to the music as closely as I do when Jeremy is playing the games, but he’s also commented on the racism in some of the songs, so I have to think some other players have noticed as well.
But at least for the first two games in the BioShock series and the bulk of BioShock Infinite, the music has a lovely vintage feel that fits well with the game setting and keeps me entertained while Jeremy plays it!
