Using Folklore in Fiction

My collection Old Legends and New Fables collects stories and poems that come from folklore, mythology, and other stories from a wide variety of cultures. While most of the pieces are related to older stories, there are a few that touch on more modern mythologies and folklore.

For my pieces, I often drew from stories I knew from my lifelong fascination with myths and legends. Even for those, however, I needed to do a bit of research, which often wound up giving me additional pieces to play with–either by drawing parallels between disparate folklore or by finding a detail I hadn’t recalled. For others, I started with research and then found my way to the story I wanted to tell.

For people interested in using folklore in their fiction, there’s a great panel on Underrepresented Mythologies from Quarancon 2022 (which I moderated) and another panel from Flights of Foundry 2024 on Folklore from All Corners. The latter isn’t available online yet, but my very brief recap of that panel is available here.

And if you want to see how one author pieced together folklore, mythology, and more, check out my collection, Old Legends and New Fables!
