The Hermit in A Tarot of Sorcery and Sages

The Hermit tarot card represents solitude, introspection, and the seeking of internal wisdom. In A Tarot of Sorcery and Sages, this is represented by a haiku and a short story.

The haiku, with the first line “a witch’s cottage,” deals primarily with the solitude part of the Hermit’s meaning. The short story, “Architect of the Rebellion,” involves the full meaning of the card, with an added emphasis on community and popular support for leaders. Set in a pre-colonial, South American-inspired fantasy world, the main character had sought solitude, but events outside of her control draw her back to her home, where she has to consider her role in bringing about political change. Though this story wasn’t originally written with the Hermit in mind, I realized after writing it that it very much fit the meanings of this card.

You can read both of these pieces inĀ A Tarot of Sorcery and Sages, alongside other poems and stories reflecting each of the Major Arcana of the tarot!
