“I Was a Slacker Teenage Witch” and “Cat’s Got Your Tongue” in Weathering Youth!
Because Weathering Youth is my biggest collection to date, I’m grouping the short stories and flash fiction stories in pairs for my posts, based on the way they fall in the collection. This lets me look at the connections between the stories and how I decided to arrange specific stories in the collection!
“I Was a Slacker Teenage Witch” and “Cat’s Got Your Tongue” are both stories involving main characters who are slightly older than teenagers, likely both in their early 20s. They’re both contemporary fantasy and told in the first person, but they diverge pretty strongly after those commonalities.
“I Was a Slacker Teenage Witch” is about a 20-something witch trying to find her place in the world she inhabits, while at the same time acknowledging her own shortcomings. She has lofty goals as a witch but lacks the discipline to reach them. So she tries a series of shortcuts until finding the method that works for her.
“Cat’s Got Your Tongue,” on the other hand, features a character who has been unaware of the supernatural until she notices some oddities at the apartment of one of her housecleaning clients. When she finds out what’s really going on, she’s surprised, but before she can do anything about it … well, let’s just say fate intervenes.
Both of these short stories are exclusive to Weathering Youth, which is available in print and ebook formats!
