The Non-Player Review of Video Games: Surprisingly Good at Tiger Woods Golf?

Many years ago, I dated a guy who was one of four brothers. All of them played video games, though they had different game preferences. His two older brothers were mainly interested in sports games, so that’s what he played with the two of them. And one at least one occasion, they invited me to play, too. The game in question? Tiger Woods Golf.

Now here are some important things. I have played softball, soccer, and tennis. I’ve played mini golf (badly) and went to the driving range with a different ex-boyfriend (where I mostly sat and watched after hitting a few balls … badly). And I had never played a golf video game.

The three brothers I was playing against HAD played golf. And they had played this game before. But somehow? I kicked their butts at Tiger Woods Golf.

Looking back, I recall they set me up with a female golf player. And this was apparently a player who had a lot of skill with putting. So if I could get the ball onto the green in one swing (not guaranteed), I would likely be able to make par (if not better). The characters they were playing tended to be able to get some serious distance with their tee-offs, but then struggled with putting. So between a little bit of luck and the built-in character skill, I was way more successful than them at this specific game.

Jeremy bought me a copy of Tiger Woods Golf after I told him I was weirdly good at it. Unfortunately, it was for the PS2, and my PS3 wasn’t backward compatible. We have a PS2, but it was always set up as a secondary system, so it was harder to use. So my copy of the game has never come out of the box.

But maybe some day, I’ll finally get it out and see if it was a fluke that I beat golfers playing a golf video game or if I’m actually good at this game.
