History That Never Was

May is not quite a week away, but it’s time for me to post the monthly writing prompts, so they’ll be ready for you on May 1st!

May is always MerMay for me, so the first column is the 2025 MerMay official prompts! You can use this column with the words as they are or think of them in terms of mermaids if you prefer!

The second column is @uusikuuu’s Background Art Challenge from 2020. This list is all places or things, and the juxtaposition of the first and second columns is really delighting me for a good chunk of the days! (There are also some days where reading across the columns sounds like a great title!)

The third column is the Kick in the Creatives Quick Kick May list, which might be from 2024. But I didn’t use it last year, so it seemed like a good way to round out this month’s word lists!

There’s actually very little overlap between the lists this month, which is always nice! I’ve put an asterisk on the words that are closely related (not identical). As always, you can either skip one of them, write on the same piece on both days where those words occur, or do something different!

Check back on the last Friday of each month (or occasionally the first day of a new month, when that falls on a Friday) for my History That Never Was writing prompts!
