“Pivot Hinge” in The Sidewalk Diverges
“Pivot Hinge” started out as a story about something that was hidden in plain sight, paired with a random quote that is lost to the ages. I originally called the story “Let My Love Open the Door,” and the earliest draft involved a film, which eventually morphed into an album and a music video. The original draft was also very light on speculative elements, which I amplified in the later versions.
This was one of those stories where I really believed in it, even though I had a hard time selling it. It’s flash fiction, and it’s a fairly quiet story, in which the protagonist is dealing with the grief of having lost her father but also trying to solve a mystery that he left behind.
Ultimately, though I wasn’t able to sell this story, it found a perfect home inĀ The Sidewalk Diverges, where it sits alongside other contemporary fantasy stories with slipstream elements. You can findĀ The Sidewalk Diverges in ebook and print formats!
