My Recent Publications for Young Readers
I’ve published a few new pieces for young readers in the months since my last post on the subject. The main one is “The Storyteller,” which appeared in Bikes, The Universe, and Everything from Microcosm Press. Though the protagonist is a young adult, the story is appropriate for kids as well.
“The Storyteller” is also in my collection, Weathering Youth, which features stories for younger readers. Though most of the stories are geared more toward young adult readers, and some of them do feature some darker elements, there are several stories that younger readers would enjoy. These include:
- “Charming, Not Useful,” which pokes fun at fairy tale princes
- “Flora, Alone,” which features a girl learning to crochet
- “Flapping,” which features a young dragon protagonist
- “Salt Circle,” which features a frog protagonist (though this story does involve ghosts)
- “Help! I’ve Been Reincarnated as a Pumpkin,” a poem in which a rat undergoes a magical transformation
- “Student Response to Referral Report Re: Bring Your Pet to School Day,” which involves an unusual pet
- “Hatching a Plan,” in which a younger sister solves a problem with the help of an odd librarian
There are a few others in this book that are likely also suitable for children, but some may depend on the child in question. I recommend that a parent or other adult read through the stories before giving a kid access to Weathering Youth, which is available as an ebook or print book!
