Fun for Friday: Writing Prompts for High Schoolers

Although these writing prompts from the University of Iowa’s Iowa Reading Research Center are labeled as being for grades 9 through 12 (or American high schoolers), they’ve got some excellent advice and ideas that could be used by older writers as well!

The document is set up to be used by a teacher, and includes tips for the various genres. The prompts themselves are on page 7 of the PDF, with five detailed prompts for the fiction genres covered. There are also five non-fiction writing prompts included, though some of them could also be recast to be fiction writing prompts. (The pages beyond the prompts offer two pages of lined paper per prompt that could be reproduced in a classroom setting.)

If you’ve got younger writers in your life, this could also be a fun exercise to do with them, with each of you writing to the same prompt and then swapping stories to read and discuss!
