WriteHive Online Conference 2024: Marginalized Genders in Fiction
Now that the 2024 WriteHive Online Conference panels are available on their YouTube channel, I’m catching up on the ones I missed during the conference itself and sharing some of the things I gleaned from them here!
“Marginalized Genders in Fiction” was a panel where the panelists talked about the history of trans and non-binary representation in fiction, both in the recent past and further back. They also mentioned some of the missteps fiction has made in this regard.
However, they also presented some advice for authors about how to have good representation of marginalized genders in their writing, including doing your research, finding sensitivity readers, and understanding that some stories about marginalized gendered characters should be written by people who share those marginalizations. They also offered some authentic ways of portraying marginalized genders in fiction, along with some examples of authors who had done this particularly well.
The panel runs 47 minutes, and the panelists cram in a TON of recommendations, so I recommend watching it with the captioning or transcript available and a notebook or digital document open to jot them all down!
