Review of The Dragonfly Gambit by A. D. Sui

A. D. Sui’s The Dragonfly Gambit (Neon Hemlock Press, 2024) is a twisty, keeps you guessing, sci-fi novella with an unreliable narrator and a rich cast of characters who all want something from each other and will go to any lengths to get it!

Nez was a skilled pilot until an accident left her nearly dead and unable to fly due to the damage to her body. Now, she’s been press-ganged into helping the Rule win the war against the dissidents that threaten their existence. Suddenly, she’s swept back into the orbit of her former friends, Shay and Kaya, the latter of whom is now the ace pilot for the Rule. On top of this, the Third Daughter, current head of the Rule, takes a special interest in Nez and her project to help the Rule end up on top.

It’s difficult to say much more about the plot without giving too much away, but it’s fair to say that almost nothing is what it seems, and the ride can feel a bit like a roller coaster with twists, turns, and sudden drops. But the storytelling and the characters are so compelling that you’ll feel driven to keep going to see what happens next.

If you enjoy sci-fi with complex characters who are always hiding something, you’ll enjoy The Dragonfly Gambit with its subtle worldbuilding and engaging plot!
