June 2024 Recap

The butterfly house at the zoo has reopened, and this one wanted us to know they were NOT flying.

By the numbers:
Stories out at the beginning of the month: 82
Acceptances received: 1
Rejections received: 63 (+9; +1)
Stories withdrawn: 0
Resubmissions: 38
New Submissions: 1
Stories out at the end of the month: 46

June continued my slow submitting trend, though I did submit more stories and poems than in May. But I also had a lot more rejections (mostly packets of poems), a bunch of pieces (9) where the markets never responded, and one project that was cancelled, so all submissions were returned.

I finished one new piece, a poem, in June, and I sold a short story, which will be out in about a year, because sometimes publishing has a long lead time.

I didn’t wind up hitting hardly any of my goals in June, in part because of K-pop concerts and family visiting, but also because my day job has been EXHAUSTING this summer. So I put a bunch of my writing projects on the backburner, but I kept up on proofreading and layout for DCO, my craft book exercises, and my book review.

Because I already know July is going to be similarly exhausting (tail end of a family visit, plus moving our office location for my day job), I’m doing a lot less this month:

  • Write a piece of poetry a day
  • Ebook layout for a DCO collection and a novella
  • Putting together a short story collection of my own
  • Four craft book exercises
  • Review a book

I might also write some flash, but I’m not committed to that quite yet. Hopefully, when August rolls around, I’ll be ready to start tackling some more writing!
