“Fashion Statement” in Conceits of Whim and Fancy

My short story “Fashion Statement” started out as a flash fiction piece, inspired by the title “The Ladies Wove Baskets of Steel.” Early on in the process, I changed “baskets” to “dresses,” and the original story had a single dress made from steel to dissuade the suitors of a princess reluctant to marry. From the initial feedback I got on the flash piece, I could tell this was a much bigger story, and it wound up being almost four times as long as the original piece. The dress made from steel remained in the story, but other dresses made their appearances, too, and the narrative was woven together by the seamstresses that serve as the story’s main characters.

“Fashion Statement” originally appeared in The Lorelei Signal, but it is no longer online. Now, the only place to find it is in Conceits of Whim and Fancy!
