Books and Stories for Younger Readers
I’ve got some recent story publications that are suitable for younger readers, along with several books, including steampunk and fantasy titles!
My flash fiction story “Dinosaur Seeds” is written for an adult audience, but kids would very likely enjoy this story, which involves a child planting “dinosaur” seeds and the surprising results! This story can be found at Short Circuit, but you might also find it in a Short Edition story dispenser, some of which are located in libraries and transit centers around the world.
My flash fiction story “The Experiment” is written from the perspective of a young girl living in the West during the Dust Bowl and a magical experiment she conducts. This story can be found in Unfixed Timelines 3 and Unfixed Timelines Omnibus. (My story “Green-Eyed Phantom” is in the same books, also featuring a young girl protagonist, but it’s a bit spookier.)
For books, I’ve got two steampunk/gaslamp fantasy books for middle grade readers (The Trouble with the Tick-Tock Tabby and C. and M. Marsh, Girl Detectives). The former is a single longer story, and the latter contains three short stories. Both have a couple of scary moments regarding kidnapping and orphaned children, but otherwise, these should be suitable for kids around the same age as the protagonists, who are nine and twelve.
Finally, The Spiders of the Shifting Swamp is my children’s picture book that I also illustrated! It’s a fantasy story in which spiders run a shop and interact with other swamp creatures. The reading level is about right for younger grade school children, but it’s a great book to read to younger kids. (And it’s not a rhyming book, so maybe not too bad for adults to enjoy reading aloud!) The primary scary bits for kids in this book are a missing adult spider, but he’s saved safely!
Because of the illustrations, The Spiders of the Shifting Swamp is ONLY available in print, while The Trouble with the Tick-Tock Tabby and C. and M. Marsh, Girl Detectives can also be purchased as print books or ebooks! Unfixed Timelines 3 is in ebook only, while Unfixed Timelines Omnibus is in ebook and print. However, these latter two contain some stories not necessarily appropriate for younger readers.
