January 2024 Recap

A gorgeous morning at UW, with Mount Rainier just visible under the clouds

By the numbers:
Stories out at the beginning of the month: 112
Acceptances received: 1
Rejections received: 36 (+4)
Stories withdrawn: 0
Resubmissions: 36
New Submissions: 11 (+1)
Stories out at the end of the month: 116

January turned out to be a great month for getting pieces that were not quite done at the end of 2023 finished. I completed two short stories, four flash fiction pieces, and five poems that went out on submission in January, plus one more short story that I just finished on the 31st, so it didn’t go out until February. I sold one story in January, which is a microfiction piece that I’ll talk more about later!

Otherwise, the submissions roll out and and some rejections roll in. January has actually been oddly slow for that, though I know that my submissions in 2023 were a bit slower than normal, particularly in the latter part of the year.

Also in January, I revised my non-fiction project; finished writing seance; revised parade, bulldozer, and color; revised some poem fragments; wrote a new poem (not for submission); wrote the flash pieces for submissions and the contest; did craft book exercises; reviewed two books; and proofread a DCO book.

In February, I plan to:

  • Submit my non-fiction project to a potential publisher (fingers crossed!)
  • Revise my superhero novella
  • Finish a short story (chapel)
  • Finish drafting two short stories (cloak and neglect)
  • Revise short story (seance)
  • Start a new short story (atoll)
  • Write a couple of flash pieces for submissions
  • Write two flash pieces for contest
  • Start revising the contest flash pieces
  • Do four craft book exercises
  • Review a book
  • Assemble and proofread my next collection
  • Edit a DCO book
  • Ebook layout a DCO book

That’s not a short list, but it all looks doable!
