Anti-Advice: Bad Writing Advice
If you’re an author looking for advice on the internet, you’re likely to come across plenty that’s outdated, possibly “written” by an AI, or otherwise downright bad.
This article from LitHub collects some samples of bad advice, often given by good writers. This is the sort of stuff that gets repeated over and over again by other writers who presume that if a good writer says it, it must be valid advice. But that’s not always the case, and the author of the article breaks down the problems with these bad pieces of advice.
As writers, it’s important to develop the ability to read or hear writing advice and determine if it’s truly essential or just something a lot of people have parroted over the years. And then, when you’re in a position to give writing advice, be conscious of giving useful advice rather than parroting what you’ve always heard as the essentials!
