September 2023 Publications

I had two new publication in September of this year, both fantasy stories.

My short story, “Kick in the Door and Improvise,” appeared in volume 11 of Tales from the Magician’s Skull. The title is taken from the common “plan” we use in a lot of our tabletop RPGs, to the point that I cross-stitched a pair of pieces with that quote for my hubbie and one of his friends. (The idea is not unique to our group, I’m sure, but we have used it quite a bit.) In this story, there’s a lot of improvising going on, as the main character has been hired by an exiled princess to help her win her throne back. But the details of “how” become more complex than planned, leading the main character on quite a journey.

My flash fiction story, “Refuge,” was published in Home, which is an anthology. In my story, a person on the run from an oppressive government seeks a place where she will be safe–where she’ll find a home. This one was inspired by an image of a massive early statue of the Buddha in China, so large that it has built in drainage systems and caves behind it.
