History That Never Was

I started writing “Wishes without a Birthday Cake” in a writing workshop with K. Tempest Bradford that involved her asking a question to begin the story, followed by additional questions to shape the story as we wrote. While the end result of that exercise needed some editing after all of the free-writing, it turned into a slightly bittersweet but charming story of a teenage girl who is sure the fae are coming to take her away on her birthday.

“Wishes without a Birthday Cake” appeared in Land Beyond the World in 2021 and then in The Sidewalk Diverges, which you can find in print and ebook!
