“There Is No I in Heavenly Host” in The Sidewalk Diverges
“There Is No I in Heavenly Host” was 100 percent written on a quasi-dare. The editors for a special speculative fiction issue of Friends Journal mentioned wanting to see a story in which a biblically accurate angel dealt with having their name misspelled on their coffee order. So I wrote it. And they loved it.
This story will appeal to anyone who’s ever been frustrated by people having difficulty spelling their name, whether on a coffee cup or otherwise. During my first marriage, when I had an unconventionally spelled surname, I felt a lot of this–some members of my own family couldn’t even spell my last name, which made cashing checks from them a pain. Having reverted back to my maiden name, my name is much easier to spell now, but I still get an alarming number of orders for “Don.”
