TV Recommendation: Sandman

Unsurprisingly, we cruised through the first season of Sandman. This is a show I’ve been awaiting since 1995, when one of my college friends introduced me to the comic book. Short version: I was not disappointed when the wait was over!

There’s been discussion of the casting and the differences between the comics and the show, but I think that the changes that have been made are not so dramatic that they depart too far from the source material. After all, the comics were written before most people carried tiny computers in their pockets or purses. It’s inevitable that there will be changes to the world inside the comics as well. And Neil Gaiman has a close involvement with the show. I trust that he’s going to make the choices as a storyteller that will best convey his story.

If you haven’t read the comics, don’t let that stop you from watching the show. It gives you enough information to understand it even if you haven’t been a fan for 27 years! I’m also here to say that if you’ve heard about the episode “24/7,” it is completely fine to skip that episode without losing any of the story. (If you haven’t heard anything about it, it involves a number of potentially triggering elements–one summary I found listed: realistic body horror, graphic self-mutilation involving knives and toolbox contents, suicide, explicit gore, large amounts of blood, and eye horror.)

I’m super excited for more seasons of this show, which we will hopefully get. There are still three more members of the Endless we haven’t seen yet (including my personal favorite, Delirium), plus some of my favorite issues yet to come!
