“Coffin Coffee Table” in Doorways in the Gloom
“Coffin Coffee Table” is a story that I like to include in my readings because the twist gets people every time. I often introduce it as a story about carpentry and consent, which is both entirely true, and only the half of it.
The idea of building a coffee table in the shape of a coffin is one that an ex of mine and I often discussed. We never actually built one, and I’m kind of glad, because it would have been a beast to move. (And the odds are that when he moved out, he would have left it for me to wrangle.) But it led to a good story, many years later.
“Coffin Coffee Table” originally appeared in The Journal of Compressed Creative Arts and was podcast at Manawaker Flash Fiction Podcast. You can also find it in Doorways in the Gloom with other dark fantasy stories.
